Phone photography – always clean your lens!

Soft shot - dirty lens

In my recent post 10 Tips for … Better photos with your phone I mentioned that a common problem with phone photos is that the lens is often dirty and should always be cleaned before you start shooting.

I do this as a matter of course – or so I thought – but a few days back I was waiting at the start of a shoot and shooting some converging lines in the car-park when I noticed that the shot I’d just taken looked a bit soft.

Wiped the camera lens on my jeans ( this was my iPhone!) and re-took the shot, and guess what. Yes, it was much sharper – you can see the difference…

  1. A clean lens is the alpha and omega when it comes to photography. Many pictures have been destroyed because of a dirty lens. I work in a photo shop and recommend to all my customers to buy a portable cleaning kit. I sell a lot of this one and use myself.

    • Hey Joakim – thanks for the comment – you are quite right of course. I guess I should also clarify that you should never clean any proper camera lens on your jeans or shirt – you should always use a proper lens cloth or other microfiber product designed for coated high quality optical glass.

      • I think it is wise to emphasize that anything other than products made for cleaning lenses are not recommended. A t-shirt, sweater or someting like that could easily scratch the lens.
